An Intranet Case Study
The Internet and Intranets, in general,
and the World Wide Web, in particular, continues to dominate the trade
press, mass-media, conferences, and IT education courses. Given the
amount of information, chicanery, and hype we are exposed to daily,
there is a lot of confusion for CEOs, CIOs and EIEIOs.
Behind the hyperbole, however, there are tools which, if used
right, can enable an organisation to leverage its investment in IT
and provide new facilities to support business decisions quickly and
effectively.
This document examines some pilot work performed on the NSW TAB's
Management Information and Administration systems commencing in
September, 1996. The purpose of this
pilot was to determine the:
- Type of facilities which could be provided;
- Ease of providing them;
- Ability to build on existing skills, infrastructure, and
applications;
- Efforts in enhancing and maintaining WWW-based applications.
Following this pilot study, work commenced on rolling out
Intranet services throughout the organisation.
